DO DAITH PIERCINGS WORK FOR MIGRAINES?

Since time began, mankind has searched for answers to physical issues. Migraines are an inconvenient, painful reality for so many Americans that it’s little wonder we’re looking constantly for ways to find relief. One of the newer and more unusual methods is daith piercing, which has some reputation for effectiveness against chronic headaches.

What is Daith Piercing?

This is a piercing located in the inner cartilage section of the ear, which runs through a pressure point. These piercings are typically performed at tattoo and piercing shops, and there is little research to support them as yet. Patients who have had the piercings, however, claim to have seen an improvement in the intensity of their headaches.

Here’s what you need to know about daith piercing for migraines.

 

A daith piercing is a piercing located in the innermost cartilage fold of the ear. It’s a specific type of piercing in the ear cartilage midline toward the front of the ear . This type of piercing has been done for thousands of years, but can be quite painful due to the bony cartilage and care is required to keep it clean and prevent infections.

The name of this type of piercing is only thought to have begun around the 1990’s. (1)

As many of us migraineurs know, when traditional approaches for treatment fail we often turn to complementary alternatives.

Acupuncture is a common alternative approach.  Supporters claim the daith piercing is effective because it occurs on the same pressure point on the ear that is used by acupuncturists to treat migraine.

I have suffered from horrible migraines (air pressure migraines as well as hormonal or stress induced) for years, and this summer I finally decided to get my daith pierced after doing research for 6 months prior. I got it pierced by Rachel, she was very sweet and kind, I asked her a lot of questions and she answered them all. It was a very intense pressure, but honestly compared to my migraines I could take it and it was worth it. After a few months I have noticed a significant difference in my migraines, I used to get 1-2 per week and now I only get maybe 1, 2 tops a month. I still use the salt water spray on my piercing every day, and it is something you will have to do in the morning and at night to clean it. I've gotten used to it, I don't think mine will be fully healed until 1 year. Everyone is different. I highly recommend coming here if you are going to get your daith pierced. Very impressed! I had a horrible migraine that was on and off for a week or so. After I realized that I was eating excedrin like candy, I decided to get my daith pierced. I was skeptical, but I had tried everything else. Italo was very nice and knew exactly what he was doing. The pain was bad for about 3 seconds, but not as bad as the migraine had been a day before. The crazy thing was that it worked instantly. My migraine was gone before he got the needle out and the jewelry in. I had a bit of a tension headache in my temples from cringing, but it was irrelevant in comparison. I waited a week before I posted a review because I've had migraine seemingly-miracle solutions wear off. This has not. I haven't had a migraine in 7 full days. When I go back to change out the jewelry, i'm going to go get the other side done, just in case. I can't recommend this place enough.

So I finally decided to get my daith piercing!! My brother who has gotten his body piercings here suggested me to get it it here at Chicago Ink. My other piercings and tattoos were done at Jade Dragon and Tattoo Tattoo Factory.

I have numerous ear/body piercings and so my expectation is pretty high. Rachel who did my daith piercing was awesome and very knowledgeable ! The studio is super clean. At first I was a bit nervous because my last piercing I had has been quiet awhile. But I love my daith piercing and already compliments in just less than 24hrs of getting it. 

I am planning to get a cover up tattoo and I'm definitely considering on getting it done here!

HI everyone. I head about the Daith piercing from one of my friends and I thought I would give it a try. I've never had migraines until about a year ago. I know everyone is different but when I would have a migraine I would feel like passing out, my speech would get messed up and get blurry vision. Of course I thought it was the worse case scenario and I was having a stroke. After a lot of unnecessary doctor appointments I decided to give the piercing a try. It's a 50/50 situation. I have to tell you it's been a month and I have not had a headache since I got it done. Used to wake up every morning with a terrible headache and I pretty much would live off Advil. Italo was great very professional, their prices are reasonable and the shop is also very clean. I highly recommended this place. If you're suffering from migraines maybe give it a try it might work out for you the way it worked out for me. I truly did not believe it but i am so happy i haven't had any headaches since then.

I heard about the daith piercing when a video went viral on Facebook and a woman raved about how it helped her migraines. I have suffered from migraines for over 10 years, and figured it was worth the risk. I've tried countless pills, and teas to help cure me of my migraines. None of them helped. Best case scenario, it helped my migraines. Worse case scenario, I'd have a cute piercing. 

I looked up places to go to get it done, and I found something recommending Italo for this piercing. I went it, and requested that he be the one to do the piercing. He was awesome. I didn't feel uncomfortable when speaking with him at all. 

The piercing doesn't hurt exactly, but the sound of the needle passing through the cartilage definitely made me cringe. The healing process also sucks, but it was beyond worth it. 

I got my piercing done on 02/10/17, and I have not had a single migraine since. I DO still get headaches, but nothing that a few tylenol doesn't help get rid of. If you are thinking of getting this piercing to help ease some of your migraines, I highly recommend it. Of course, everyone is different, and what works for me might not work for you, but as someone who suffered with migraines, what have you got to lose?

Glory be to The Most High, I took my oldest baby girl for that Daith piercing Chicago Ink Tattoo & Body Piercing. (ITALO * piercer*) They did an awesome job very clean and informative. My baby migraine went from an 10 to an 5 instantly. I was in amazement and I was so happy. she was just smiling and that made me smile even more. Her Dr told me to give her Melatonin to help sleep at night also. When she woke up this morning she was smiling saying she slept well and don't feel groggy or tires like she usually did. I know once she takes something for the pain it may even go lower. I just know it worked for my baby and she can study and not cry from severe pain. I thank Carla C. Valdez again for giving me insight on this and I'm very thankful for the place she referred me too. I don't care if it's not medical Date on the Daith piercing but it works for my daughter. She may get the other side did after the 2mos when she can change the earring. I am thankful to the Almighty my baby don't have to be on a thousand medications altering her brain development. I can't stop smiling myself.

I got my daith pierced by Italo 2 months ago here and I defiantly recommend anyone who is thinking about it going here to get it done.  I am a constant migraine sufferer and had done my research and figured what the heck its just a piercing.  I was still scared cuz i have not had my ears pierced since I was in elementary school.  Chicago Ink is extremely clean and they are very professional.  All the equipment they used was sterile right out of the bag.  Italo made sure I was comfortable the whole time and let me know exactly what he was doing.  The piercing looks great and my migraine frequency AND intensity has cut in half!  I do still have migraines - I never expected to be completely cured, but any migraine sufferer knows any help is a blessing. To be able to get weekends back is amazing! Normally any bad weather will affect me but not anymore :) I am so happy and I plan on getting my other ear done after this one heals completely by next year.  Not to mention it looks awesome.  I defiantly recommend anyone thinking about getting a daith piercing going here to get one!

I got a Daith a couple of months ago to see if it would help with my chronic migraines - Italo was the tech who did my piercing, he was very informative and professional as well. While I cannot say that I am completely cured of them, my episodes have become less frequent not as strong as before. This truly has been a great help for me. I highly recommend if anyone suffers from migraines to get one.

 

Just got my Daith pierced at Chicago Ink. The woman who did my piercing was Rossmary. I had a really good experience. Very friendly and nice. If I have anything negative to say is that the lady who did my piercing was swamped with walk ins, calls, patron questions, so she was being pulled in all directions, but was very professional. Rossmary told me that they were short staffed so that was expected. I would totally recommend this place. I read the reviews as well. People have lots of positive things to say about Chicago Ink. There was a mother their with her daughter looking into tattoos and she made the same comment about how Chicago Ink had great reviews. I would go back if I ever decide to get my other Daith pierced.

Italo did a daith piercing for my daughter. He was very professional and took time to make sure we understood everything.  He made sure she was doing ok during the procedure and understood care instructions.  The piercing was to help with migraines and he was very familiar with the reason and process. He just called to check how she is doing.  I'm beyond satisfied with the day of service and follow up.  I highly recommend Chicago Ink & Tattoo and especially Italo.  Outstanding!!  And my daughter has not had a headache!

I went to get my daith pierced because I suffer from migraines frequently and I'd seen that they can have a positive impact on migraines. Angie was great, she explained every step and explained the aftercare in an easy to understand manner. The piercing went pretty quick and I absolutely have had no problems, I totally recommend getting your piercings done here and with Angie.

I had read that the Daith piercing helped with Migraines. My daughter has had them for years and we have tried everything. I suggested we do the Daith piercing together, after researching places to go I chose Chicago Ink!!! So happy I did. Italo did our piercings and was amazing!!! He was so nice!! We went back 8 weeks later and had the bar changed to cute hoops.  The place is super clean! So happy we chose Chicago Ink ! Best part is migraine free now for 3 months. Thanks Italo !
